Five Keys to Battle of the Big Cats

For the Crown

This year’s Battle of the Big Cats will be the first for a city title. Never had the SaberCats and Lions both defeated Westmoore in the same year before last week, when the Cats beat the Jaguars 17-14 a week after the Lions dominated in a 35-3 decision. In 16 meetings, Southmoore holds a 9-7 advantage against Moore. The Lions have won six of the past seven meetings after the Cats claimed wins in eight consecutive seasons from 2009-16.

Duel of the Fates

Each team’s quarterback was excellent in his win over Westmoore. Moore’s Malikai Miller connected with his receivers thrice for scores to lead the Lions over the Jaguars for the second time in 24 years on Week 0. Southmoore’s Tevin Hayes dazzled in his varsity debut throwing a pair of TDs on Week 1 to beat Westmoore for the first time since 2015.

Big Play Mav

Maverick Gardner shook nearly every player on Westmoore’s punt team two weeks ago for a 68-yard return touchdown late in the first quarter. It was arguably the game’s best and most crucial play. The four-sport athlete has played QB, WR, DB and Returner in his varsity career and has been touted by the Lions staff for his unique speed and chunk play potential. If money is on the line, Gardner will make at least one pivotal gain against his city rivals this week.

Pass Rush

Southmoore’s defensive line overwhelmed Westmoore last week behind a stellar performance from junior frontman Joseph Dover, who recovered a fumble on the second play from scrimmage and frequently had his hands on Westmoore QB Brodie Inhofe in the backfield. If this unit is as relentless as it was last week, Miller won’t have an easy night delivering the ball to his weapons.

Everyman

Jonnell Alexander, the Lions’ senior star receiver and likely Miller’s favorite target, burned Westmoore for five catches, 103 yards and a TD. Their connection alone will require delicate scheming from the Southmoore defensive staff if the SaberCats wish not to suffer the same fate.
